Holbein's illustration shown in Plate 1 from Moriae Encomium is associated with the following text drawn from
John Wilson's 1668 translation:
At what rate soever the world talks of me (for I am not ignorant what an ill report Folly has got,
even among the most foolish), yet that I am that she, that only she, whose deity recreates both
gods and men, even this is a sufficient argument, that I no sooner stepped up to speak to this full
assembly than all your faces put on a kind of new and unwonted pleasantness.
The associated French text from L'Eloge de la Folie (1728) follows:
Ordinariement ma reputation est déchirée par la médisance; & il n'y a pas jusqu'à mes Favoris,
qui ne parlent mal de moi: c'est de quoi je suis bien informée. Mais ona beau me noircir;
cette Folie que vous voyez, c'est elle, c'est elle, pourtant, qui a le pouvoir de remettre en belle
humeur les Dieux, & les Hommes.
